The Sustainability Lab shaping brighter futures

EU projects

We work with a number of projects with the Welsh European Funding Office, part of the Welsh Government which manages the delivery of EU Structural Funds programmes in Wales:

Bluefish logo: "Building resilience into blue growth in the Irish and Celtic Seas fisheries and aquacultures

Bluefish will develop knowledge and understanding of the marine resources of the Irish Sea and Celtic Seas by addressing knowledge gaps regarding the effects on and potential vulnerability of selected commercial fish and shellfish from predicted climate change. Through the transfer of knowledge, transnational expertise and best practice with respect to study and management of commercial fish, shellfish and aquaculture under a climate change context, and through the strong marine science partnership of the consortium (4 Irish and Welsh HEIs, the Marine Institute and BIM), our aim is to provide region-wide adaptation strategies for the benefit of coastal communities. Bluefish will assess and disseminate knowledge of risks and opportunities for commercial fish and shellfish under predicted climate change impacts to our stakeholder groups, SMEs, coastal communities and interested parties in both Ireland and Wales using a variety of mediums that will appeal to all sectors.

Dwr Uisce logo

Dŵr Uisce aims to improve the long-term sustainability of water supply, treatment and end-use in Ireland and Wales through the development of innovative technology platforms, undertaking economic and environmental impact assessments, and developing policy and best practice guidelines to facilitate integrated low-carbon and smart energy solutions for the water sector.  The Dŵr Uisce project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Ireland Wales Co-operation programme 2014-2020

ISPP logo

The aim of ISPP (Irish Sea Portal Pilot) is to test the feasibility of a larger project (The Irish Sea Portal (ISP)) which will provide a platform that can meet the requirement for knowledge flow in order to generate growth in fisheries and aquaculture. The Pilot will facilitate the formation of one cluster in order to test the principles of the ISP. This cluster will be focused on a study of juvenile shellfish larvae and seabed settlement. It will explore the siting of potential shellfish seed collection sites and the feasibility of seed collector deployment within the study area. This cluster will broaden understanding of shellfish larvae movement within the Irish Sea and its surrounds followed by larval settlement patterns where they are termed ‘seed’. This is a resource shared across the Irish Sea that crosses regional and national boundaries and has a significant economic impact in part of an industry worth some 254m euros.
