An unusual Carnival comes to Bangor
by Jo Stroud
After the success of Sustainability Week in April 2017, The Sustainability Lab has recently co-ordinated Bangor’s first ever Sustainability Carnifal in partnership with over a dozen teams from across the University and Students’ Union. Running from 1st February to 1st March, Carnifal has been a much talked-about feature of the University’s various events calendars for students, staff and the local communities in and around many of the campuses.
Dr. Einir Young, the University’s Director of Sustainability explains:
We wanted to showcase the range of sustainability-related events that run in a typical month at Bangor University so we created a month-long extravaganza of ordinary events!”
The Sustainability Lab team co-ordinates Bangor’s research and development on its journey to becoming The Sustainable University. Through its work, the team has been finding that sometimes people are unsure what sustainability means to them, and understand it in the context of a particular topic such as recycling, energy efficiency or financial issues. To raise sustainability awareness, broaden understanding of the University’s complex journey, and have some fun, the team came up with the idea of bringing over 100 sustainability-related events together under the Sustainability Carnifal banner.
Jo Stroud, Carnifal’s Co-ordinator continues:
Carnifal has been a really fun way to show people that sustainability is so much more by showcasing the huge variety of amazing events that Bangor runs every month – from beach cleans and wetland restoration to CV writing and leadership masterclasses to film nights and theatre shows to fitness and mindfulness sessions. It’s been a great success, roll on next year!”
